Demo

Melanie Abrantes 2.png

Join us for an inspiring professional demo with Melanie Abrantes, where she'll demonstrate the art of turning cork!

Raised in Houston, TX, she moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to study Product Design at Otis College of Art and Design, where she first learned the craft of turning on a lathe. In 2014, she relocated to Oakland, CA, to fully pursue her business.

Melanie works with a variety of unique materials to create high-quality, functional, and beautiful products. Her expertise lies in turning one-of-a-kind bowls, vases, planters, and objects, with a special focus on cork and wood. Her love for woodworking stems from the fact that every piece is as unique as the material from which it's crafted.

An accomplished wood carver and educator, Melanie is also the author of Carve: A Simple Guide to Whittling. She has taught carving workshops worldwide and was named one of Country Living Magazine's 100 Most Creative People. Her work has been featured in Dwell Magazine and The New York Times, and she’s been a speaker at the Forbes Power Women’s Summit. You can explore more of her work on social media @melanieabrantesdesigns or visit her website at melanieabrantes.shop.

Directions to SCHS Woodshop

The address is 3000 Benton St., Santa Clara. The entrance to the woodshop is through the rightmost entrance (black gate) on Benton St. Once you enter the gate, drive all the way straight until you come across a second security fence. The drive through gate on this fence usually remains closed but there is a pedestrian gate on the left end of that fence close to the building and you can walk in through there.  Please note that you will not be able to get to the woodshop if you enter through any other entrance to the school. Park anywhere near the woodshop.
